Education Required for the Ultrasound Technician

The ultrasound technicians or the sonographers will operate the medical imaging machine which employs the sound wave of high frequency to produce the images of the internal tissues and organs. Physicians will use the image for treating and diagnosing the patient. The ultrasound technician will work in the doctor's office, clinics and hospitals. Most of the students gain the associate degree from the community or technical college and there are other set of individuals who prefer the 4 year ultrasound technician program. The individuals trying to attend the classes in ultrasound technology must have background knowledge in the subjects like math, science and is very helpful for choosing the ultrasound technician field. 


Schools:

Most of the schools generally offer the ultrasound technology programs and the course period varies from the 2 year technical school to the 4 year university. There are certain hospitals that offer various training programs that are approved. While selecting the course the stdenst must give more preferences to the programs that are accredited by the CAAHEP. The searches done in the year 2009 showed about 168 accredited course programs for the diagnostic medical sonographer.


Courses:

The students who are undergoing the sonographer program will take the classes in instrumentation, patient care, ethics, physiology, anatomy and physics.


Specialties:

There are various sonographer programs and the students can select the appropriate specialization course based on their interest and preference. The ultrasound technicians can specialize in one discipline or more than one discipline and it includes vascular technology, neurosonography, echocardiology and obstetrics. In the case of the specializations the bachelor's degree is required and the students have to complete the course to become a successful ultrasound technician.


Clinical Experiences:

During the school education the sonography students will participate in the clinical training program at the affiliated medical facility. The ultrasound technicians will have direct contact with the patient's during the practical training session and this will obviously provide the hands on experience in the ultrasound field. 


Certification:

Most of the employers generally prefer the ultrasound technicians who have owned the certification through the ARDMS associations. It is a non-profit organization that is aiming to develop knowledgeable ultrasound technicians.  The ARDMS conducts the examination for the ultrasound technicians to check the quality and standard of the technician as they must meet the minimum qualification to get registered as an ultrasound technician. The student passing the examination is designated as the registered diagnostic medical sonographer.
